History of the Golden Nugget Sportsbook
For a number of years Golden Nugget was known for its old-school-style Las Vegas casino, which opened in 1946, but now it is making a name for itself thanks to its online sportsbook and casino offerings. But it took a few years to get there.
In December 2013, Golden Nugget debuted its online casino in New Jersey. Despite launching after competitors, it became the top online casino in the state in terms of revenue by December 2016 and has remained that way ever since.
Next, in February 2019, Golden Nugget’s online sportsbook went live in New Jersey. Later that year, Golden Nugget’s online casino generated more revenue than its retail casino — Golden Nugget Atlantic City — for the first time ever.
Then, in July 2020, it was announced that Golden Nugget was partnering with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community in Michigan, where Golden Nugget plans to open and run its latest online sportsbook and casino. The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community owns and operates Ojibwa Casinos in Marquette and Baraga, both of which are in Michigan. The online sportsbook opened in Michigan in January of 2021.
Roughly eight months later Golden Nugget Sportsbook West Virginia went live, thanks in part to a partnership with The Greenbrier in WV. Golden Nugget Sportsbook Virginia then launched just a few weeks later. A deal with a land-based casino is not a necessity in VA and Golden Nugget is not currently partnered with any casinos there.
